关于 BitTorrent(BTT)

What Is BitTorrent?

Designed to integrate blockchain into torrenting, BitTorrent is the largest decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) communications protocol that allows for file sharing and downloading of large files on the web.

BitTorrent merged with TRON in 2018 through a multimillion-dollar deal that led to the launch of the BitTorrent token a year later. The cryptocurrency was created to leverage the advanced tokenized infrastructure on TRON, as well as empower and incentivize the millions of torrenting users on the BitTorrent protocol.

As one of the largest P2P networks on the internet today, BitTorrent has over 100 million active users. Such traffic will help in the scalability of TRON, while allowing users to share and store files in a safe and permissionless way.

What Is BTT?

BTT, the native digital currency for the BitTorrent protocol, is a standard TRC-20 utility token built on the TRON blockchain. BTT provides incentives and facilitates low-cost micropayments on the BitTorrent network.

There’s a total supply of 990 trillion BTT tokens. Launched through an ICO that sold out within minutes, BTT rose to its highest price of $0.000003054 in January 2022.

However, as the bear market persists, BTT’s price has yet to fully recover from an all-time low of $0.000000705.

What Is BTT Used For?

As a utility-enabled token, BTT has multiple use cases geared toward a healthier and highly efficient BitTorrent ecosystem. Being the unit cryptocurrency of BitTorrent, BTT is denominated in every transaction on the network.

On the BitTorrent Chain (BTTC), a cross-chain interoperability protocol that supports asset transfers across TRON, Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain (now known as BNB Chain), BTT is its native coin used for paying gas fees, staking and governance.

On the software itself, BTT incentivizes users to continue seeding even after they’re done downloading. Offering such rewards has helped reduce swarm deaths (torrent without seeders), one of the key challenges facing the BitTorrent protocol before the merger with TRON.

Another core use case of BTT is to power BitTorrent Speed, a product designed to boost download speeds on the network. Downloaders can bid for faster speeds using BTT.

BTT can also be used to pay for goods and services from online merchants that accept the token. The network has partnered with popular crypto payment gateway providers such as CoinPayments, Plisio and CoinGate to facilitate the acceptance of BTT payments by merchants.

Who Is the Founder of BitTorrent?

BitTorrent Inc. was founded in 2004 by Bram Cohen, an American computer programmer and tech visionary. Frustrated by the slow and inefficient traditional file-sharing system, Cohen created a faster way of downloading files by breaking them into smaller files known as torrents.

BitTorrent was quickly embraced by the masses who used it to download music videos and movies. By 2005, BitTorrent accounted for 60 percent of the peer-to-peer network.

Despite its colossal adoption, the BitTorrent protocol faced serious challenges of network congestion, exploding bandwidth needs and censorship laws. Even worse, there was no clear way to monetize the platform.

Faced with these challenges, the BitTorrent protocol merged with TRON in July 2018 at the cost of approximately $140 million.

Ever since, BitTorrent is on track to achieve its vision of decentralizing file sharing and providing internet users with innovative products to stream media in a secure and trustless way.

Cohen has since moved on to head another of his crypto creations, Chia Network, and left BitTorrent (now known as Rainberry, Inc.) in the hands of Justin Sun, the founder and CEO of the TRON network.

How Does BitTorrent Work?

Originally, BitTorrent was created as a P2P file-sharing protocol with downloaders (commonly called seeders/peers) and uploaders (content providers) who jointly form a swarm. However, due to discrepancies in the upload and download speeds, most swarms often deteriorate and eventually die.

By leveraging TRON’s peer-to-peer advanced technology, BitTorrent can offer incentives to users through a tokenized bidding system. Users in the system are rewarded with BTT tokens to continue sharing their bandwidth, which keeps a seed file running even when a download is complete.

BitTorrent employs an on-chain/off-chain approach in which all BTT transactions are first made in a private ledger, and then transferred to be recorded on TRON’s blockchain, which ensures transparency and accountability.

BitTorrent also launched its own blockchain, the BitTorrent Chain (BTTC), in December 2021. A heterogeneous cross-chain interoperability protocol, it runs on the proof of stake (PoS) mechanism, using sidechains for scaling of smart contracts. It currently supports asset transfers across three blockchains; TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain.

Why Is BTT Valuable?

The BitTorrent token is at the core of BitTorrent’s operations. Some of the factors that make BTT valuable include:

Scalability

Being one of the largest torrenting platforms in the world, BitTorrent already has millions of active users. Every BitTorrent user has the option to set up a cryptographic BTT wallet to sensitize and orient them to the blockchain-based model. Over time, this initiative will help scale the mass adoption of BTT, and by extension, improve the scalability of the TRON blockchain.

Multiple Use Cases

From inception, BTT cryptocurrency had a real-world use case of helping decentralized file sharing. Since then, the project has continued to innovate through the development of various projects such as BitTorrent Speed, BitTorrent File System (BTFS) and the DLive protocol that will need BTT to operate. BitTorrent is also continuously onboarding merchants around the globe to process micropayments using BTT, which is less expensive and faster.

TRON’s Vision

TRON is on an ambitious mission to decentralize the web and has a solid team driving its vision. Indeed, since joining forces with TRON, BitTorrent has undergone a revamp that continues to add value for BitTorrent users. Expanding into live streaming will help drive the mass adoption of BTT cryptocurrency.

What Makes BitTorrent Unique?

Decentralized High-Speed File Downloading

BitTorrent Speed is designed to increase download speeds from torrent clients. This blockchain-based product rewards BitTorrent users for continued seeding, even after completing a download.

The product is free, easy to use, doesn’t require any server equipment and is backward compatible in case you aren’t interested in earning BTT.

Decentralized File Storage and Sharing System

BTFS is BitTorrent’s blockchain-powered file-sharing and storage platform created to address the challenges experienced by traditional filing systems, such as censorship and explosive maintenance costs.

BTFS runs on nodes comprising renters and hosts. Hosts are rewarded with BTT tokens every week for providing storage services, while renters pay using BTT to store data on BTFS.

Decentralized Live Streaming

DLive was launched to provide a decentralized live-streaming experience using a peer-to-peer network. Under the DLive protocol, viewers become nodes within the network to distribute their stream out to the rest of the swarm. Viewers become incentivized to watch streams as they get rewarded, and they also have the option to stake BTT in the platform to earn more.
